So, what are the benefits of NFTs?

What is an NFT?

In laymen terms NFT simply means non-fungible token. Essentially, it’s a digital image - this could be literally anything, an image of a landscape, music, a drawing or illustration, montages, a conversion of a 3D rendering or even an animation. As long as the image is digital, it can be converted into an NFT.

The birth of NFTs (digital tokens) stemmed off from cryptocurrency. Now, I’m not going to go into too much depth regarding what crypto (cryptocurrency) is, but I do touch-base on this near the end of this article.

Just like any form of data on the internet, NFTs are also digital. These are stored and secured on a public digital ledger, called a blockchain, which can be traded or sold. Think of an NFT as a one-of-a-kind digital image. For example, the famous painting of Mona Lisa, of which there is only one - is unique and valuable, hence the reason why it’s safely stored in the Louvre Museum in Paris, having said that, you could probably buy a copy or poster-print of her, and although it may look close to the original, it’s still fake. Just like the Mona Lisa, NFTs are also unique - albeit not a painting - they are still one-of-a-kind, although they’re securely stored on a blockchain on the internet as opposed to a wall on a museum.

Think of an NFT as a certificate of authenticity – in that non-fungible means ‘irreplaceable’ since each token is unique, with the potential of increasing its market value, and when you own one it’s yours forever, well, until you sell it that is, hopefully for a decent size profit.

There’s certainly a real buzz of excitement around NFTs at the moment, as the feeling of owning something scarce, or more to the fact on missing out, on what could become a very lucrative investment, so people are snapping them up like no tomorrow.

What is crypto?

In essence, crypto or cryptocurrency - apart from it being a digital currency, or virtual currency, crypto is secured by something called cryptography, hence the name crypto. In a nutshell, cryptography is a secure piece of code that allow only the sender and intended recipient of a message to view its contents. In the world of crypto this consists of a private key (secret code) and a public key. The two keys are associated with an entity (crypto asset or NFT) that needs to authenticate its identity, either electronically or to sign or encrypt data.

Public Key

The public key is a large numerical value that is used to encrypt data and is used for the encryption of a plain text message or check the legitimacy of a digital signature, to convert it into cipher text. In cryptography, the public key is accompanied by a corresponding private key.

The public key is provided by a trusted, designated authority which issues digital certificates that prove the owner's identity and made available to everyone through a publicly accessible repository or directory. The key is typically stored on a public key infrastructure server and is used to encrypt data securely before it is sent over the internet.

Private Key

The Private key, or secret key, as it’s sometimes referred to, is known only to its owner and is used for encryption and decryption. There are Multiple methods that exist for encryption in cryptography – here’s two. Symmetric, the key is to copy or share by another party to decrypt the cipher text. It’s also faster than the public key. The second method is asymmetric encryption cryptography, which uses two different keys, public and private to encrypt and decrypt data.

In summary, public and private keys are mathematically connected - a public key locks up data from unauthorised use, while a private key is used to unlock it. If anyone other than the owner of the private key tries to decrypt the information using the public key, the information will be unreadable.

In summary, if happen to own crypto, and to mitigate the risk of it being stolen, it is safer to store your assets on a crypto storage device such as a Trezor or Ledger device.
